Tom Boyd is the dean of the School of Business and Information Technology at Kaplan University. Boyd earned his PhD in marketing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was a professor of marketing for 17 years before going into administration. He started his academic career at the Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University. After earning tenure there, he moved on to California State University (CSU) Fullerton as a full-time faculty member. At CSU Fullerton, Boyd became a full-time professor of marketing and executive director of the Master of Business Administration program, and finally served as the associate dean of faculty and academic programs. He was also a member of the University Foundation Board.
He has won numerous teaching, research, and service honors, including three Professor-of-the-Year awards. Boyd’s research has been published in a wide variety of journals and books, and he has been cited for his expertise on sports marketing and celebrity spokespeople in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today. Dr. Boyd’s research has focused on consumer decision making and influences on adoption of innovations. Most recently, Boyd has been studying how to make student teams more effective and how to improve the teaching of career skills across the business curriculum.
At Kaplan University, Boyd has overseen numerous innovations in curriculum, including the implementation of career skills across the curriculum, modularized curriculum, customized programs for military students, and competency-based programs.
